COLLAGE AS A DESIGN TOOL
COLLAGE IS A UNIQUE ART FORM THAT CAN ACT AS A DESIGN TOOL.
Through imagery and layering, collage can be used to explore an idea without being tied to literal design moves and detailing. Because of the loose and abstract nature of a collage, it can be used for design development to get to the root of a desired feeling or expression, which can then be understood and translated to a physical space. As designers, we have a constant stream of tricks up our sleeve to communicate a concept, and just like modelling, collaging can be an excellent way to work through a design challenge. Collaging can be used both at the early phases of a project to expand on preliminary concepts, or at a later phase to reflect upon and embody or summarize the design direction.
Here is an example of a collage projects from our fav collage artist/designer David! This collage delves into the typology of an office through the hypothetical lens of bees as occupants. The Hive was a conceptual project wherein a space composed of 3 cubes was to be planned and rendered. In this beehive-scaled office, vertical mobility and flow of work dictate the layering and hierarchy of spaces.
This concept collage is an interpretation and exploration of our recent Brock Street Project, a mid-century home renovation with great bones, and even greater clients.
The mid-century modern design movement hones in on how people use space, designing around user function from the inside out rather than the other way around. The goal with this renovation was to enhance the function and feel of the space -- tailored to the way the clients live -- while respecting and honouring the spirit of the home. Luckily, our clients were open-minded and very trusting.
The clients love to cook, host, and enjoy company. Using a bit of non-conventional space planning and re-working the existing sight-lines, the newly renovated space elevates the social dynamic by marrying comfort and beauty, providing a lovely backdrop for engagement and conversation without distracting from the connection between guests and hosts.
Minimalism sets the stage for rich textures and materials to shine. A palette of bold accents and elegant woods (as well as a curated collection of furniture and art) embody the timeless feel of mid-century modernism, while grounding and integrating the clients’ personal flair – all of which come to life when filled with friends and family!
