WHEELHOUSE

Wheelhouse Cycle Club is a Canadian indoor cycling studio centred around creating a space for community.

Wheelhouse, a cycle studio originating in Saskatchewan, came to us with an established brand, vision, and clientele. Keeping in mind their story and passion, we collaborated with our clients to design their first Manitoba location to foster community relationships.

The challenge was being able to fit in as many bikes as we could, creating an inviting space that encouraged community engagement, without feeling crowded. Part of Wheelhouse’s story was calling the bike area The Vault - originating from their first location in Saskatchewan where the bikes were in an actual bank vault. In this design, The Vault is a stepped space with bikes, with custom controlled lighting as well as a large lit logo and mirrored wall. The space was custom designed to suit the specific needs of creating a distinct atmosphere and environment (sound, light, and visual effects). The steps have a lighting detail, with a coved lighting detail on the ceiling as well. We built a unique double wall within The Vault to create sound attenuation, which was an important detail for our clients.

Working with open spaces with functions that overlap, we maximized the space by designing a central piece of custom millwork to maximize the space and allow for the many functions (entry check in, lockers on both sides, shoe storage, mirrors, chalkboard to display interactive content.)

On the right side of the main space are custom wood benches which are used before and after class to put your items down, change your shoes, or talk with friends.

This leads to a custom  planter area and a TV to show stats as well as a tiled water bottle filling station.

On the other side, there is a retail area, individual washroom and change rooms.

Keeping in mind the minimalistic and industrial palette of the space, we kept the existing concrete floor and left the concrete brick wall exposed, and incorporated concrete bricks under the benches. There is even a selfie area along the benches that is meant to look like stamped concrete with their logo. The washrooms have a raw metal shelf under a custom framed mirror that sits adjacent to the raw concrete brick.
